SHILLONG: After the Ksan setback, the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) is planning to promote geo-tourism and has chalked out a plan that will be discussed in details soon.
A senior official said Meghalaya has the potential for geo-tourism, which will also attract academic experts and students.
On asking which sites the government was planning for the kind of tourism, the official said the list would be finalised after a meeting with the Geological Survey of India, which is likely on February 15.
The DMR’s plan will also be discussed with the Ministry of Mines.
Meghalaya has an abundance of caves and natural resources for sustainable geo-tourism. The recently discovered Meghalayan Age at Mawmluh, which is a limestone cave, enhances the potential of geo-tourism. Last year, in an interview with The Shillong Times, renowned caver Brian Kharpran Dally had rued the government’s apathy to protect the caves, which are the state’s asset.
