Only two file papers for council polls on Day 1

SHILLONG: Only two nominations were filed on the first day of filing of nominations for the upcoming KHADC elections here on Saturday.
In the morning, Fantin Joseph Lakadong, husband of Congress MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh, filed his nomination as Congress candidate from Laitumkhrah constituency. He said he would raise different issues, including the plight of farmers in the state.
Later in the evening, sitting MDC from Nongthymmai, Latiplang Kharkongor, who is contesting the election as an Independent, also filed his nomination here at the DC office. He was accompanied by his supporters. Kharkongor said that the role of an MDC is to perform his duties as per the provisions of the Sixth Schedule. He also said that his agenda would include the issue of forest mining among others.
The last day of filing of nominations is February 7 while scrutiny will be held on February 8 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 9. Elections will be held on February 27 while counting of votes will take place on March 2.
The model code of conduct for the elections has already come into effect.
In most of the other districts, nominations were not filed on Saturday and the district administrations expect a number of candidates to file their nominations on Monday.
