SHILLONG: Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor has said the state election commission does not perceive any disturbances along the Indo-Bangladesh border ahead of the Lok Sabha elections but the inter-state boundary with Assam was a matter of concern.
During a recent conversation with the media, Kharkongor said he has requested deputy commissioners and SPs of both the states to have intensive meetings so that the problem of dual voters is ironed out.
“The de-duplication software takes care of the problem of dual voters at the first level. Besides, there are physical measures which will be put in place by the respective DCs and SPs of both the states who have been directed to have intensive meetings to ensure that the problem of dual voters is ironed out at the local level,” the CEO said, maintaining that the dual voter verification is a continuous process.
The commission is abiding by the Supreme Court order of 1991 to maintain status quo in the area of differences with no action on the part of either state.
“As of 1991 whichever polling stations are there those would stay as per status quo,” said Kharkongor.
Also, districts which are on the international border are in communication with the BSF and their counterparts.
