SHILLONG: The Congress has demanded complete scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Opposition party chief whip, PT Sawkmie, said the Centre should immediately scrap the bill instead of shelving it or putting it on the back burner.
“In spite of so much protest by the people of North East, different NGOs and even the political parties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is yet to respect the sentiments of the people as he is still pushing for the amendment,” Sawkmie said.
According to Sawkmie, the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi has taken up the issue seriously as he had already assured that the party would oppose the bill in the Rajya Sabha.
Sawkmie also said the address of the President during the joint sitting of both the Houses ahead of the Budget session, highlighted the merits of the citizenship bill but this should be expunged.
