SHILLONG: The Congress in Meghalaya has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is divided over the contentious issue of Citizenship Amendment Bill which was passed by the Lok Sabha recently.
Opposition chief whip and Congress MLA, PT Sawkmie said that while PM Narendra Modi and BJP president, Amit Shah looked convinced to go ahead with the Bill and were seeking the support of regional parties to pave way for the passage of the Bill, the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh is trying to pacify the North Eastern states and the Chief Ministers by stating that they would not bring up the Bill in the Rajya Sabha
It may be mentioned that apart from Congress and other political parties, the two BJP MLAs in Meghalaya, A L Hek and Sanbor Shullai have also vehemently opposed the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
The Bill has received flak from the NGOs, political parties and citizens in the entire North Eastern states and there has been vociferous opposition to the Bill,
The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 (CAB), seeks to provide citizenship to migrants from persecuted minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
