SHILLONG: The West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee (DCC) has expressed its disappointment over the decision of the State Government to overlook creation of a new district in West Khasi Hills despite a long pending demand for the same.

“We were hoping that West Khasi Hills would get another district after learning that the Government is creating another three new districts. We were shocked when we were informed that our district has been overlooked,” West Khasi Hills DCC working president Manstudy Nongrem said while speaking to reporters after the meeting of the Congress leaders and party workers from the district here on Saturday.

Nongrem said that the people of West Khasi Hills have been eagerly awaiting creation of a new district for the past many years considering the backwardness of the region and the lack of governance.

“We would continue our demand for creation of a new district out of West Khasi Hills,” he said while also informing that they would also be seeking an appointment with Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma in the coming days to place their demand.

Nongrem said that they would also be submitting a representation to the Chief Minister on their demand.

When asked, he said that they would leave it to the wisdom of the Government either to uplift Mairang or Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Divisions into a full-fledged district.

“We would be happy if the Government selects either Mairang or Mawkyrwat for upgradation,” Nongrem added.

When asked if they would cut across party lines to demand for the district similar to the policy adopted by the leaders from Garo Hills who are also demanding for a creation of North Garo Hills district, the DCC working president refrained from commenting on this matter.

“We are all here as members of the Congress party. We do not know the minds of the other parties on this matter,” he said.
