SHILLONG: The North Eastern Hills University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) criticised the NEHU administration over erratic power and water supply, poor hostel facilities and lack of hostel accommodation.
Raising their voice of resentment, the NEHUSU along with the NEHU teachers Association (NEHUTA), the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NEHU unions has decided to organise a general body meeting to call all the NEHU students to discuss about the matter including Wi-Fi connections.
The union has given one-month time to the NEHU administration to resolve the issues of students.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, finance secretary of NEHUSU, Iarapbhathik Shangrit said, “If no decision is made in one month, the Joint Action Committee (JAC), NEHUSU and NEHUTA will take their own decision to force the VC to resign or resort to other measures to fulfill the demands.”
Previous NEHUSU members would issue one memo after another but nothing has been done so far.
The union has raised concern on the erratic power supply which has affected the students and teachers as well.
Pointing to hostel issues, he said, “The NEHU administration should have leased hostels outside the campus. The demand for hostel accommodation is increasing but the number of hostels is not.”
According to him, students from other states and students from even the rural areas of the state are forced to find accommodation elsewhere.
The union demanded that administration should lease hostels outside the campus and alleged that hostels were not properly maintained with students being served unhygienic food.
Stating that there is a Bamboo hostel in NEHU, Shangrit said the administration of NEHU instead of giving the hostel to NEHU hostellers gave it away to NIT students. The first preference should be given to NEHU students.
He informed that students are often fined and expelled from the hostel etc.
“These are the issues we want to bring forth before the administration,” he said.
Shangrit said the healthcare facility has its shortcomings with lack of doctors, nurses.
