GUWAHATI: Assam Police on Monday arrested a 21-year-old man from Goalpara for posting an “objectionable” comment on the Pulwama terror attack on social media.

Shahanur Islam, a resident of Nabagata Simlitola in lower Assam’s Goalpara district, was arrested around noon on Monday based on a complaint lodged by a youth against his Facebook comment.

The Facebook page of Goalpara District Police, Assam also has a snapshot of Shahanur’s “Well Done” post against a picture of the Kashmir suicide bomber, Adil Ahmed Dar, armed with rifles and ammunition.

“We have arrested Shahanur today on the basis of a complaint lodged at our police station yesterday. A case (number 19/2019 dated – 17/02/19) under Sections 120(B)/153/153(A) of IPC was registered. Interrogation is currently going on,” Mukut Kakati, the officer-in-charge of Dudhnoi police station, told The Shillong Times on Monday.

The arrest comes in the wake of summons reportedly issued by Chandmari police to a lady professor here for allegedly posting objectionable comments against security forces in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack on Facebook on February 15.

There are also reports of a group roughing up a student in Upper Assam’s Ledo area on Monday for an alleged “pro-Pakistan” post on social media.

The cyber cell of the Assam Police is keeping a hawk eye on all objectionable posts and irresponsible comments on social media with police sources informing that at times, suo motu cases were also lodged against persons making such comments that may incite flare-ups and were detrimental to society.
