SHILLONG:  Even as the BJP, an ally in the MDA Government in Meghalaya  has decided to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from both the seats, Shillong and Tura,  in Meghalaya, the other MDA constituents have remained undeterred as far as selection of a common candidate is concerned.

Speaking on the matter, Chief Minister and NPP national President Conrad Sangma said that every political party had their right to decide whether they would contest polls or not, which is the whole idea of being independent.

When asked if the plans of the BJP would have any bearing on the MDA coalition and the prospects of having a common candidate, Sangma said that they were looking at it and would observe how things went from here

He further said that there was no confirmed closure of whether there  would be any impact or not and they would sit and decide.

“There is no hard and fast rule that they cannot contest. We are looking at it and see how things go there is no confirmed closure of whether we will have or not have. We will sit and decide,” Sangma said.

On the other hand, Deputy CM and NPP leader, Prestone Tynsong said that MDA core coordination committee would sit down and take a call on the matter after the MDC elections were over.

Meanwhile, president of the United Democratic Party or UDP, Donkupar Roy said that they were only concerned about the regional parties and they would have a regional common candidate.

It may be mentioned that UDP has already declared former MLA Jemino Mawtho as its common candidate while the MDA coordination Committee is yet to sit and decide on the matter.
