SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Claudia Lyngwa, has said that she will try out new strategies to manage traffic congestion in the city even though posts of more than 200 traffic police personnel in the district are vacant.
Lyngwa, who recently took the baton from former SP Davis Marak, said that East Khasi Hills district is a well-oiled machine and she will just improve on it.
Admitting that traffic and spurt in crime is a question on everyone’s mind, she, however, added that the success rate of the district police has been good.
According to Lyngwa, though there is a shortage of over 200 traffic police personnel, a new batch is undergoing training and it will be over by August and they will be put on road for traffic management.
The district police chief also informed that the department will be getting motorcycles especially for congested areas like Mawlai where a traffic police personnel has to walk a long way down the road to maintain order.
Asserting that the traffic in Shillong has reached a saturation point, Lyngwa said that the police will make the best attempt possible to ensure it flowed freely.
Meanwhile, on the spurt in crime in the city, she said that there was a time when the police were concentrating on militancy, but now criminal elements have also become active.
She also informed that different police stations in the city have picked up a large number of petty thieves in the past one week.
She also expressed concern over the growing menace of drugs while maintaining that Shillong was a transit point earlier, but has now become a user. Apart from cheap drugs, a lot of others like ‘World is Yours’ have made their way to the city and police will make the best of efforts to contain the menace.
