TURA: The A’chik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA) on Thursday urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to look into the prevailing law and order situation in Garo Hills.

In its letter to the CM, the student body while lauding the new government for its initiatives to improve the law and order situation in the region said that of late, many cases of dacoities, robberies including a mob lynching have taken place.

“There are many reports of dacoit cases and at the same time some people have started taking law into their own hands. We are deeply saddened to know that even the churches and schools have become the targets of the dacoit groups. The recent mob lynching in Chanangpara village near Phulbari in West Garo Hills is also a matter of great concern as such act will encourage people of other places also to take the law into their own hands,” the association said.

Pointing out that many reports have suggested that the three people who were brutally assaulted in the mob lynching incident were innocent, the association urged that proper investigation is initiated and the attackers punished. The association also demanded compensation for the three victims and their families.

The association also suggested that police intensify patrolling in vulnerable areas.

“Our police needs to be more alert and more patrolling needs to be done in suspected areas. We are hopeful that you will take necessary steps to end the dacoit menace in the initial stage so that better security can be provided for a peaceful Garo Hills,” it said.
