Hooch tragedy claims 39 in Assam

GUWAHATI:  At least 39 people were killed after consuming spurious illicit liquor in three places in Golaghat and Jorhat districts of Assam since Thursday night even as Assam government has ordered an inquiry into the tragedy.

As many as 30 persons including women died after consuming spurious liquor at a tea estate in Golaghat district while two other persons died at Merapani in the same district. All of them fell ill after consuming the liquor and died in local hospital.

Seven more persons died at Borhola in Jorhat district after consuming local liquor, sources said.

This is the biggest hooch tragedy in the state in recent time. forcing Assam Government to order an inquiry.

Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal while expressing concern over the death of people including women due to consumption of  spurious alcohol  in Golaghat district, has ordered an inquiry into the tragedy.

The CM has instituted a one-man inquiry and entrusted the responsibility to Upper Assam Division Commissioner Julie Sonowal.

The inquiry will focus on studying  the circumstances and other related causative factors and prepare a report and submit the same to the government.

Sonowal also asked Minister, Topon Kumar Gogoi,  Jorhat MP, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Khumtai MLA, Mrinal Saikia to rush to the spot  of hooch tragedy in Golaghat district to assess and quell the situation arising out of deaths.
