SHILLONG: The Senior Congress leader in Meghalaya, Ampareen Lyngdoh has slammed the  MHA notification  issued recently wherein the union Government empowered Assam Rifles personnel to arrest anyone and search a place without a warrant in five northeastern states

Talking to media persons here on Friday, Lyngdoh said that with this notification, the Union Government was infringing upon the sovereignty of the country by removing federal structure which is inherent with the constitution

“You cannot treat us under the Armed Force Special Powers Act and we are not a party to the Act,” she added

She said that the Union Government was now sending armed forces to arrest people without warrant and raid anybody’s house and in future they may even declare the state of emergency and put the North Eastern states under President’s Rule

“You are undermining the capacity of the state armed force and state police to manage our own affairs,” she added

Asking the Union Government as to why they are targeting North East, she said there was no mention of Meghalaya in the notification but in the same notification, it has been mentioned that Assam Rifles will be given the authority to operate in certain part of Meghalaya.

She said that the notification had created a lot of confusion and this move of the Union Government was not painting a healthy picture of Meghalaya before the world.
