Hooch tragedy claims 39 in Assam

GUWAHATI: At least 39 people died after consuming spurious liquor in three places in Golaghat and Jorhat districts of Assam since Thursday night while the Assam government has ordered an inquiry into the tragedy.
As many as 30 persons, including women, died after consuming spurious liquor at a tea estate in Golaghat district while two other persons died at Merapani in the same district. All of them fell ill after consuming the liquor and died in a local hospital. Seven more persons died at Borhola in Jorhat district after consuming local liquor, sources said.
This is the biggest hooch tragedy in the state in recent times, forcing Assam government to order an inquiry.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while expressing concern over the death of people including women due to consumption of spurious alcohol in Golaghat district, has ordered an inquiry into the tragedy.
Sonowal has instituted a one-man inquiry and entrusted the responsibility to Upper Assam Division Commissioner Julie Sonowal. The inquiry will prepare a report and submit it to the government.
Sonowal also asked Minister Tapon Kumar Gogoi, Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia to rush to the spot to assess and quell the situation arising out of deaths.
