SHILLONG: After a long lull, the fencing work along the indo-Bangla border in some areas of the state has been finally resumed.
Sources in the BSF said that the construction of border fencing in some patches had started and the work was going on though the pace was slow.
Stating that the fencing work is taking place in some patches of Jaintia Hills and South Garo Hills, sources added that the land acquisition process was also on in many areas and even the land acquisition was slow since there were objections in certain areas
According to sources, there is still over 100 kilometer length of the border in Meghalaya which is yet to be fenced and the fencing work is taking time since land acquisition was a long process
“In addition, leveling of the land and removal of jungles in the areas takes some time,” sources added.
It is learnt that out of the total 443 km stretch, 319 kilometer has been fenced while the remaining portions are still pending due to opposition from the CCIB.
The decision of the Central Government’s to construct fence 150 yards inside the zero line is being opposed by land owners and pressure groups in the State who are demanding that the fence should come up on the zero line to prevent loss of arable land.
As a large chunk of the Indo-Bangla border in Meghalaya is open, many illegal activities such as smuggling of cattle and even illegal migration takes place.
