TURA: One person has been killed and two others critically injured when the scooty they were riding on collided head on with a speeding truck in the heart of Tura town’s Dakopgre locality on Tuesday night.
The incident took place around 8 pm when the speeding truck (ML08 A 9688) rammed against the scooty (ML08 E 6916) outside the SMELC premises, barely 100 meters from Dikki Bandi Stadium.
Sources claimed that the victims were reportedly taking food for a patient in a hospital when they were hit by the truck. The impact was so powerful that the three young men were flung from the scooty into the air and lay in a pool of blood on the road while the truck driver fled the scene.
An angry mob of people later burnt down the truck and police had to use riot control measures to bring the situation under control.
According to police, one of the victims was declared dead on the spot while two others are in a critical condition and under medical treatment at Tura civil hospital. Police teams rushed to the scene following a tense standoff with an angry mob that demanded arrest of the truck driver.
Off late, dozens of trucks from outside the region that ferry goods into Garo Hills have been frequently found speeding through the thoroughfares of the town.
Meanwhile, on February 17 at about 12.30 pm, a motorcycle (ML-09A-2527) ridden by Changleram M Marak knocked down Clement Ch Marak at Gobindopara village (WGH). As a result, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
