SHILLONG: The polo shopping complex that is yet to be completed will be inaugurated in June-July this year depending on the release of pending central funds.
Informing this here on Tuesday, an official said the state government is waiting for the release of third and fourth installments of the Rs 21.41-crore sanctioned fund.
“Depending on the funds, we can inaugurate the project,” the officials said.
According to officials, the structure of the building is complete but the interior work is left and it will be done soon after funds are disbursed.
The National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), which is implementing the project, was scheduled to complete it by March this year but the inauguration of the project will take place in June-July since the model code of conduct will also come into force shortly in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The structure is set to transform the busy Polo market area.
The vendors’ market is proposed to rehabilitate 297 vendors and shopkeepers. NBCC is implementing the project and the Shillong Municipal Board is the beneficiary as the particular land where the market is coming up belongs to the Board.
It is also learnt that the department will give first preference to those shopkeepers who were evicted from the old Polo market. Few years back, meat vendors at Polo were evicted by the Shillong Municipal Board to pave way for the construction of the complex.
