SHILLONG: The election to Autonomous District Councils of Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills was peaceful on Wednesday with no report of any untoward incidents while the turnout was fairly good.

Addressing the Press, Commissioner and Secretary of District Council Affairs (DCA) department, Tining Dkhar said as on 6 pm on Wednesday, the percentage of voters turnout in Jaintia Hills was 78.65 while in Khasi Hills it was 60.28 per cent.

He further informed about the successful utilization of EVMs in this poll and said that malfunctioned EVMs were replaced on time.

“In Khasi Hills, there are 7 EVMs and 6 in Jaintia Hills which were found to be malfunctioning, but were later replaced,” he said.

Dkhar is expecting a decent turnout as comparing to the 2014 figures – the turnout was 72 percent and 79 per cent for Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills respectively.

“The figures are not final because tabulation and compilation of the data and figures will be forwarded to by the DCs and ROs and hope that by 11 am tomorrow, we should be able to give the exact and final figures of the voters’ turnout constituency-wise,” he added.

He also informed that the polling was smooth and law and peaceful with no report of malpractices.
