TURA: Trucks and other heavy vehicles will not be allowed at thoroughfares here during rush hours.
West Garo Hills police decided to restrict the movement of trucks on Wednesday, a day after a 35-year-old rider was killed and two pillion riders were critically injured when a truck hit their scooter. Trucks will be allowed to move from 8 pm to 7 am the next morning.
Over the last couple of months, dozens of trucks ferrying goods into Tura have been frequently found speeding through the thoroughfares of Tura during the evening hours causing concern to pedestrians and commuters alike.
Some months ago, truckers were directed to adhere to the norms of movement after 8 pm but many had cited flimsy excuses to move out during peak hours of traffic resulting in congestion and endangering lives.
Tuesday’s incident sparked violence and an angry mob pelted stones at police personnel.
“We abstained from using force in controlling the gathering as it would have further escalated. Emphasis was laid on protecting life and public property,” said police chief MGR Kumar.
