SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and state officials from mining and geology department held a discussion in New Delhi on Tuesday with the central government departments concerned to discuss resumption of coal mining in Meghalaya.
An official source said the chief minister also met Home Minister Rajnath Singh separately to discuss the issue.
According to the official, the Home Ministry has left it to the Coal Ministry to decide on the resumption of coal mining in Meghalaya.
There is urgency on the part of the Centre to decide on the matter as the Supreme Court wanted it to come up with the decision within one month from February 19.
“This means that by March 19, the Centre has to take a decision on the matter,” the official added.
The state government had sought certain exemptions from the central mining laws so that coal mining can resume with safeguards.
