SHILLONG: The Abattoir project at  Mawlai Mawroh  was completed long time back but the  project is yet to be made fully operational   even after years of its conception

An official  the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department said that the trial run of the project was still on.

When asked who would operate the slaughter house, the official stated that the Government was contemplating to hand over the project Khasi Jaintia Butchers Association to operationalise the project but a decision had not been taken as of now

It  is said that as per the plans the abattoir would be handed over to Butchers Association on lease for a period of ten years. However, the property will continue to belong to the state government.

Earlier, the department was contemplating privatisation of the project but later decided to abort the plan.

The abattoir was built at a cost of Rs 22 crore by Rapsang Group of Companies here in collaboration with Real Growth Company, Chennai.

The plan is to slaughter 240 cows, 160 each pigs and goats daily. The facility will end open slaughter of animals and ensure safe and hygienic meat. There will be effluent treatment plants for pollution control. The government is planning similar abattoirs in Tura and Jowai also.
