Move to end water crisis in Tura

Tura: After facing intense pressure from the people and various NGOs, political parties and stake holders of Garo Hills, the State Government has cleared the decks for sanctioning of three new pumps and maintainence of old ones with immediate effect to bring to a close the ongoing water crisis in Tura.
The decision to release funds was announced by Youth Congress President Zenith M Sangma at a press conference in Tura Congress Bhawan.
He said that the State Government has set up a special cell for water with two magistrates and two senior officials of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department to try and end the water problem of Tura.
According to the Youth Congress president, the government has sanctioned Rs 1.93 crore to purchase three new pumps and another Rs 5 lakh for repair of the existing pumps which are in need of repair.
“The government is aware of the problem but it will take some time for the PHE department to install the new pumps,” said Sangma. He also said that efforts are on to divert water from one tributary of Ganol river called Dagal stream to bring in water for Tura and by March 28 normal restoration of water supply will take place.
Meanwhile, the Congress leader accused the NCP of playing politics by threatening to call a Tura bandh during the crisis which they had to cancel due to poor response and support from the people.
Sangma alleged that NCP leader Conrad K Sangma was behind the SMS campaign to call for a bandh in Tura on Thursday which was not supported by the people and hence called off.
