SHILLONG: The KHADC CEM designate Teinwell Dkhar is the lone UDP member who has been elected for the fourth time to the district council while his colleagues and party MDCs could not make it to the House since 2004.
In an interview with The Shillong Times on Sunday, 55-year-old Dkhar said in 2004, 2009, 2014 and the just concluded elections this year, he was elected to the KHADC while the UDP MDCs who were with him did not win.
Dkhar attributed his consecutive wins to sticking with UDP. “I joined the UDP in 2004 and contested the council polls from Shella successfully over the years without changing the party,” he said.
He is also the lone old face in the KHADC among the six UDP MDCs elected to the House.
“My victory is due to my loyalty to the party and the people. I never shifted my allegiance and jumped to other parties. I stuck to my principle and loyalty pays as frequent change of parties by others had always confused people,” he said.
Dkhar asserted that he will remain with the party throughout his political career. He admitted that there are times when one is tempted to change parties but he always resisted the temptations.
Dkhar said he is always working in tandem with the local MLA and UDP president Donkupar Roy, who represents Shella constituency in the Assembly.
Roy, who had also not changed party loyalty, said Dkhar is an example for others to emulate.
From the Congress, Lamphrang Blah is another MDC who was elected for the last four consecutive terms.
Dkhar said his priority along with the local MLA and the Assembly Speaker will be to improve the plight of the border residents in Shella. He will also ensure to preserve the tradition and culture of the indigenous people of the state.
“I will also take up the pending bills, including the clan bill, with the government,” he added.
