GUWAHATI: Rain and thunderstorm activity with the onset of the pre-monsoon season has kept a check on mercury levels and dry weather across Northeast at bay.

The Met office here has predicted reasonably fair weather in the next four to five days even as rain, particularly during the night hours, has increased moisture levels in the atmosphere over the past few days.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on Thursday, Sunit Das, scientist at the Borjhar-based Regional Meteorological Centre, says thunderstorm activity in the pre-monsoon season (March) is normal as there is strong surface wind, at times associated with hailstorm and lightning.

“However, barring Arunachal Pradesh, we can expect reasonably fair weather across Northeast, including Meghalaya, in the next four to five days. There is no cyclonic circulation or upper air trough during the period,” Das said.

Most areas of Guwahati however witnessed morning fog, which affected inland water transport communication in the city on Thursday.

“Fog during March is a rare phenomenon but not exceptional. The condition was brought about by Wednesday night’s rain which resulted in falling temperatures (maximum) while the minimum overnight temperature remained stable at 14 degrees Celsius,” he added.
