80% increase in tourists footfall in Meghalaya in 10 years

SHILLONG:  Meghalaya has witnessed a huge inflow of tourists, both domestic and foreign, with 80 per cent increase in the footfalls in the last 10 years.

This was informed by the Governor of Meghalaya, Tathagata Roy while addressing the first day of the Budget Session of Meghalaya Assembly on Saturday.

The Governor lauded the Department of Tourism for taking initiatives that has led to the huge inflow of tourists.

“Government initiatives along with community participation have sent the tourism activities in the state on an upswing,” he said.

“Meghalaya Tourism also plans to target tourism promotion in line with the State Tourism Policy taking into consideration the development of Adventure Tourism, Eco-tourism, Cultural Tourism, Cave Tourism and encouraging home stays,” the Governor added.

“Financial assistance is being provided to entrepreneurs to set up home stays and resorts under the Meghalaya Tourism Development and Investment Promotion scheme,” Roy said

Referring to Swadesh Darshan scheme of the Union Ministry of Tourism, he said the department of Tourism had recently inaugurated the log huts and other tourism infrastructure at Lake View and Orchid Lake Resort which is part of the circuit of development scheme in East Khasi and Ri-Bhoi districts.
