Shillong: The State Government has granted two locations at Tribal Research Institute, Mawlai and at Brookeside, Rilbong for setting up of the regional centre of Lalit Kala Akademi. This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister BM Lanong while participating in the inaugural function of the special exhibition of paintings and sculptures created in the North-East here on Monday. However, the Lalit Kala Akademi has chosen the site at Brookeside considering its congeniality to promote visual art in the region. Earlier, it was reported that the Lalit Kala Akademi regional centre at Shillong would be shifted to Aizawl due to lukewarm response from the departments concerned to matters relating to allotment of land for the centre at an appropriate location. The office has been functioning in Shillong for the past few years.

The exhibition, organized by the Shillong centre of the Lalit Kala Akademi, was inaugurated by Governor RS Mooshahari in the presence of Lanong, K R Subanna, Vice Chairman, Lalit Kala Akademi and Dr Sudhakar Sharma, Secretary, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi.

Lanong asserted that the Art and Culture Department was doing its best to promote visual art in the State.

In his speech, Mooshahary stressed on the need to guide local artists to prevent wastage of talents as well as to ensure the growth of art in the state.

The governor felt the presence of Lalit Kala Akademi centre in the State would create a great impact on local artists.

Altogether 65 paintings are on display at All Saints Hall from Monday till July 2 (from 11am to 6pm). Creations of six artists from Meghalaya — Thomas Marbaniang, Raphael Warjri, Royal Suting, Nathaniel Alya, Careen J Langstieh and Raj Thapa – are also on display in the exhibition.

Later, the Vice-Chairman, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi K R Subanna inaugurated an art camp and the new office of the regional centre of the Akademi.
