SHILLONG: KHNAM legislator Adelbert Nongrum said on Friday there should be more awareness among people, especially in rural areas, about the Lok Sabha elections and candidates.
Talking to media persons here, Nongrum emphasised the need to make people aware so that they do not vote blindly.
“We had gone to few villages and when we asked the name of the MP from Shillong, they said Narendra Modi. So we need to create more awareness in far-flung areas of the state,” he said, adding that people should elect eligible candidates.
KHNAM is fielding retired IFS officer THS Bonney as its candidate from Shillong parliamentary constituency.
When asked about the party’s prospects in the Lok Sabha polls, Nongrum said the KHNAM candidate started campaigning around two and a half years ago and “he (Bonney) will give a tough fight to bigger parties like the Congress and BJP”.
However, he admitted that other parties are way ahead of KHNAM but he also added that the party this time is fielding a good candidate and he cannot be ignored.
Nongrum reiterated that the party would raise the issue of inter-state border dispute with Assam.
KHNAM, which contested the recently concluded council election to the KHADC, did not win a single seat.
