Motphran area is one of the busiest and the most congested areas of the city. In recent times this important junction has been invaded by a rising multitude of people and vehicles and roadside vendors which has led to the area becoming one of the filthiest spots of the city.

Right along the junction, underneath the foot bridge is a small area where people throw their garbage without caring for cleanliness or hygiene.

Although the concerned authorities have made provisions for cleaning up the garbage in the morning everyday but throughout the day people and shopkeepers dump garbage in the dustbin which on many occasions spills on to the main road. “It always smells bad and is just so filthy,” a passer-by observed.

In Meghalaya safeguarding the environment is a primary priority of the government and the NGOs but surprisingly everyone seems to be quiet on this issue.

The dustbin has also become a recreational and relaxation centre for many drunkards who take a nap for few hours till the time they get over their hangover.

When contacted, Shillong Municipal Board CEO T Lyngwa said that the SMB vehicle cleans the area twice every day.

“People usually throw their garbage in that place at night,” he added. (By Aafaque Hussain)
