Shillong: East Garo Hills administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into Sunday’s collapse of a suspension bridge at Chichotcheng, which resulted injuries to 39 students and two US citizens.

Informing this on Monday, Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mantri said PD Sangma, EAC, will conduct the inquiry.

“The bridge was constructed by the managing committee of Riverside Adventist Academy School,” Mantri said adding that the district administration has also decided to ask the PWD to survey all such bridges constructed by private parties and assess their safety standards to avoid recurrence such incidents in future.

Meanwhile, official sources informed that no official permission from the PWD was sought by the school managing committee before constructing the bridge.

It is learnt the bridge can take the load of 30 people, however, there were 70 people on the bridge when the accident took place.
