SHILLONG: Mawprem legislator Manas Chaudhuri on Tuesday lamented the absence of any budgetary allotment for the youth of the State who are suffering from unemployment problems.

Participating in the general discussion on the budget, Chaudhuri stated that the biggest need of the hour was to make youths of the State employable.

“Youths need greater attention,” he stated.

He pointed out that the Government had declared 2012 as the ‘Year of the Youth’ but had not made any allocation for them in the Budget presented in the Assembly on Monday.

The Independent legislator also spoke on the Right to Education (RTE) Act which is expected to be launched in the State in 2013, even as he expressed doubts on whether the State is ready to launch such a massive programme.

Chaudhuri urged the State Government to rise to the needs of the disabled children and organize some sort of training for the group.

Speaking on the public distribution system, Chaudhuri urged the Government to set up more gas agencies to ease the burden of those agencies currently operating in the city.

He cited a case where a particular gas agency has 11000 consumers under it, making it difficult for the consumers to get their refill cylinders on time.

Meanwhile, the legislator also spoke on the need of construction of a heritage hall probably in New Shillong Township which will reflect the history and past events of the State.

Chaudhuri also urged the government to introduce the three-tier card system in Meghalaya to prevent entry of illegal immigrants into the State.
