Shillong: The Garo Students Union (GSU) of Khasi Hills Zone on Thursday visited Khonjoy village in South West Khasi Hills and held a meeting with the residents of more than 20 villages.
During the meeting, the GSU also formed its Khonjoy regional unit and elected its representatives to solve various issues of the Garos residing in the area. The elected representatives will work for the welfare of the students and the community’s interest on direction issued by the GSU, Shillong headquarter.
The GSU lamented the high drop-out rate among students after matriculation due to their economic condition and lack of proper infrastructure. The union also discussed the issue of there being only one secondary school in the entire region, and a hospital that was inaugurated 19 years after its construction, but which is yet to be fully functioned.
The union will discuss the grievances of the region with the state government soon.
