SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep National A’chik Movement (HANM) has demanded raising of a Meghalaya regiment to guard the inter-state and international border areas.
Briefing the press after meeting Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday, HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani said the regiment will provide job opportunities to the youths of the state.
“Having a Meghalaya regiment will benefit the youth instead of deploying the BSF,” he said.
He regretted the state will celebrate 50 years in 2022, but resolution of the border dispute continues to remain elusive. He said Tynsong told him that the chief ministers of Meghalaya and Assam will hold talks after the Lok Sabha polls.
“How will we celebrate 50 years of statehood when we don’t even have a proper boundary?” he said.
He said that deputy commissioners in sensitive areas in the borders should be indigenous officials.
Kharbani also said that four police outposts should be set up in Langpih for maintaining peace and security in the area.
He also said that they will visit Delhi and meet the Home minister after a new government is formed.
