SHILLONG:  The Election Department in Meghalaya  is  coming up with innovative ideas to address  the concerns of urban apathy by being tech savvy and connecting  to youths through technology .

Chief Electoral Officer, FR Kharkongor said that  an App “queue status” will be rolled on the date of election to address the concern of urban apathy.

This App will provide information to the people about the number of people standing in the queue in different polling stations so that the people don’t have to spend much time in the polling station.

The App has been designed so that people go to the polling stations as and when the queue is short and they can vote without having to stand in the queue for long.

On the other hand, the election department will also hold programmes in different cafes across the city to ensure the participation of the youths in the election.

According to Kharkongor, the Election Commission will connect to the youths through music, arts and social media

For the disabled voters, the  Election Commission will also design a sign App which will be uploaded with  114  electoral terms accompanied by short video clip and the election officials who have been trained about the App will be able to understand the sign language of the disabled voters. Meghalaya Deaf Association have used the App.

In addition, volunteers from NCC  and other organisations will also be deployed in the polling stations to assist and facilitate  the disabled voters on the polling day.

Meanwhile,  the C Vigil App is already working well and many people have come forward and uploaded various instances which were against the model code of conduct  and necessary action were taken

The Election Department is also using music extensively to reach out to the masses.
