SHILLONG: The United Achik Youth Federation (UAYF) on Sunday met Ambrose Ch Marak, Director of School Education and Literacy, over the deteriorating condition of schools at Garobita and Kuchisora in South West Khasi Hills as the authorities continue to neglect the issue.
In a meeting with the Director, UAYF president Sanggra Marak apprised him of various problems confronting the schools.
Sanggra pointed out that some teachers hire under-qualified substitutes in order to meet their other commitments, which directly affect the students.
Besides, over 50 schools in the district were damaged in hailstorms in May 2017, but much to the dismay of all, these continue to lie in the same state, he said.
“Students were forced to stay home for 6 months as the schools were completely damaged,” he added.
Sangrra also informed the Director that the UAYF had submitted a memorandum on November 5 last year, but no action has been taken by the authorities.
The Director assured that strict action will be immediately taken against those who are hiring substitute teachers, adding “The education policy has zero tolerance against such practice and if any teacher is found to be involved in such activities they will have to face tough legal issues.”
Ambrose also expressed concern over the state of affairs and assured that he will immediately communicate to the Revenue and Relief department to sanction funds to repair the damaged schools.
The Director also appreciated the UAYF for reporting the unnoticed malpractices.
