SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma’s latest decision to upgrade Mawkyrwat Sub-Division into a district has not gone down very well among the residents of Mairang, as the Mairang Joint Action Committee (JAC), which is spearheading the movement for creation of Mairang district, has decided to intensify its agitations to to get its demand fulfilled.

The JAC is likely to meet on Thursday to decide on its future course of action.

Meanwhile, JAC member Joy Mawlieh has strongly condemned police brutality against their members on Tuesday night.

Mawlieh alleged that while the JAC members were staging a hunger strike near the All India Radio, a group of police personnel came and demanded to know whether the JAC had the permission to hold their agitation.

“We told police that we did not have the permission, but later Additional SP (Crime) Vivek Syiem came and threatened us and then put us on a bus,” Mawlieh, who is the vice president of FKJGP Mairang Circle, said.

On reaching Lai Mer in Upper Shillong, the JAC members protested and told the police personnel that they wanted to agitate in Shillong since all the MLAs were there.

“No sooner we said this then some cops entered the bus and pointed their guns at us. After reaching Mawlong, the police beat us so much that four of our members were injured,” Mawlieh alleged.

“We were then told to get down from the bus after which the Additional SP (Crime) came and told us that we could agitate in our area and not in East Khasi Hills,” Mawlieh claimed.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Conrad K Sangma raised the issue in the Assembly on Wednesday.

UDP legislator from Mairang, Metbah Lyngdoh also informed that he had taken up the matter with the Chief Minister and the Home Minister.

However, the Speaker disallowed further discussion in this regard saying that the issues raised by the members should be expunged from the proceedings of the House. He also suggested that the members could bring a Zero Hour notice in this regard if they desired.
