GUWAHATI: With deployment of 122 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) in Assam for the ensuing Lok Sabha election, Assam Police have remained ready to handle any situation.
State Director General of Police (DGP), Kuladhar Saikia said “Additional 33 companies of CAPF have been sent to the state from outside for the elections. We already had 90 companies of central forces in the state. All these forces are being engaged in poll-related duties, along with our own state forces.”
The DGP informed that security personnel engaged in the on-going process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) left untouched while making security arrangement for conducting the election in the state.
Giving details on licensed fire-arms deposited, the state police chief said the process to collect such fire-arms was started from February one. Over 20,000 licensed fire-arms have been deposited till date. There are about 25,000 licensed fire-arms in the state.
“Moreover, 32 illegal arms have been seized since declaration of the elections on March 10,” he said.
Assam Police have executed 6300 Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs) since February 1 last and about 1,400 more are yet to be executed.
Lok Sabha election to 14 seats in Assam will be held in three phases on April, 11, 18 and 23.
The DGP informed that vulnerability mapping is being done in a dynamic process and security patrolling and vigilance had been tightened in the vulnerable hamlets or areas.
Special vigil is being kept along inter-state borders, with the DGP in regular coordination with his counterparts of the neighbouring states.
“There was an Operations Group meeting for upper Assam recently. Checking at railway stations on borders, ‘nakabandi’ (check-posts) at borders, joint police operations, if needed, are being undertaken at the borders,” Saikia added.
The social media is being monitored by Assam Police at the district-level and no serious matter of cyber crime relating to election has come to light so far.
