NONGSTOIN: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Maweit Circle, has asked West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner T Lyngwa to take stern action against the PWD for delaying repair of three dilapidated bridges connecting Nongstoin and Maweit.
HYC members met Lyngwa on Monday.
HYC president Jerimaia Dkhar told reporters that the council carried out an inspection and found that the bridges located at Wahlyngdoh, Risiang and Mawmarin were in vulnerable condition.
The locals use the bridges to carry fruits, vegetables and fishes between Maweit and Nongstoin. Jerimaia accused the PWD of not undertaking repair work before it collapsed and said it should be blamed for any loss of life.
HYC also mentioned that the district administration enforced a rule that trucks plying on the bridges can carry a maximum of 9 tonne of load but the rule is consistently deplored.
Consequently, the council members were satisfied after the interaction with the Deputy Commissioner as he assured them that he will take action over the matter.
