GUWAHATI: Guwahati railway station has become the first railway station in Indian Railways to carry out direction of National Green Tribunal for obtaining ISO 14001: 2015 Certification for “providing passenger Amenities in clean and green environment throughout the entire Railway station premises with High Class Reserve (VIP) Lounge, Waiting Rooms, AC and Non-AC Retiring Rooms, Refreshing Area, Food Courts and Sanitation”.

As per direction of National Green Tribunal, N. F. Railway had given consultancy contract for environment management system to M/s Caliber Management Solutions in February this year. M/s Caliber Management Solution is a consultancy firm based in Delhi & Guwahati which is the authorised associate of TNV certification. TNV Certification is the authorised certification body of International Accreditation Services (IAS) of United States of America, who is the member of International Accreditation Forum (IAF). While ISO makes standard and policy, IAF regulates and authorise certification bodies to issue certificate after assessment to meet compliance as per related standard.

M/s Caliber Management Solution had started auditing the facilities at Guwahati Railway station from February 2, 2019 and completed the work on March 22, 2019. The report and certification was received on March 26, 2019.

ISO stands for “International Organisation for Standardisation” which is responsible for establishing standard in different area of activities. There are many type of ISO certification and ISO-14001 is for Environment Management System as per international norms and was upgraded last in 2015. Hence the certificate is called ISO 14001:2015.

The certification will be reviewed in 2020 and hence stricter environment norms regarding waste disposal etc., have to be adhered to by N F Railway in Guwahati station area. Provision of mechanised cleaning, anti rodent treatment, use of standard cleaning chemicals etc., which are already in place will be monitored and audited by the certifying agencies which means passengers will get cleaner station premises.
