SHILLONG: The Women Cell of Lady Keane College organised a camp on menstrual health and hygiene for students on Thursday as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations.
Anjalee M. Shangpliang, a member of the Women Cell the College, said most of the students do not have the knowledge about menstruation health and hygiene.
Students also marched on the campus to show their solidarity with the nationwide programme, ‘Women March 4 Change’.
A medical camp was conducted on the same day in which free medicines and sanitary napkins were distributed. The programme also screened the Oscar award winning documentary short film, ‘Period. End of sentence’.
MLCU events for women
The Department of Social Work of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) also celebrated the Women March for Change on Thursday in collaboration with the North East Network (NEN).
The programme started with a flash mob by students. Deigo R. Sangma, an assistant professor of the department, said with the onset of the Lok Sabha polls, it is important for people to choose wisely and to choose a government that will champion the causes of women, especially the marginalised ones whose voices are discriminated and stifled.
Balarisha Lyngdoh, senior programme associate of NEN, spoke on women of the region becoming victims of gender inequality.
Samanda Phanwar, the project coordinator of Lamjingshai, an NGO of the region, spoke about the NGO’s work with sex workers and transgender and the efforts and initiatives it takes to remove the stigma attached to them and give them their rightful place in society.
