Nongmynsong is probably the first locality in Shillong to implement the road expansion work to ease the growing traffic congestion in the area.

According to Hek, the construction work for the project has already begun and the project is making good progress.Reacting to a query about the land acquisition problem which is a trademark in many people projects, he said earlier residents were reluctant to part with their land but finally agreed to it.

The estimated budget of the project is around one crore while the Government has to pay more than seven crores as a compensation to the residents of the area.

“The project is not only expansion but we will also beautify it,” Hek told reporters here on Monday.

The project was sanctioned under the special plan assistance, he said adding the contractors who have been allotted the work have already started the road expansion work.According to Hek, the road leading from Lai lad till Nongmynsong Bazar would be expanded for 10.5 metres.

“Although this will not be four laning but it will be an expanded road and the locality would also benefit from it,” Hek said.

It is learnt that the scheme would also include construction of proper drains as well as footpaths in the area.
