TURA: Election fever has touched the youth of Garo Hills as hundreds of enthusiastic boys and men have also joined the campaign bandwagon of both Congress and NPP hoping to do their bit for their favourite politician.
As D-Day nears and campaigning begins to wrap up, both the National Peoples’ Party (NPP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) unleashed their respective youth brigade full steam with hundreds of bikers undertaking rallies across different parts of Garo Hills.
For the Congress the target was the coal rich area of Nongalbibra in South Garo Hills as the bikers with party flags fluttering on their motorcycles. The bikers snaked through Siju along National Highway 62 before concluding at Baghmara, the district headquarter of South Garo Hills.
This was the second rally by the Congress in less than two days. On Saturday the party displayed its strength rallying in Chenanggre (Adokgre) village of North Garo Hills, the very place Late P A Sangma termed a place of victory.
Not to be outdone, the NPP also displayed their numbers with a similar rally in North Garo Hills. Hundreds of bikers carrying flags with the NPP’s symbol ‘Book’ and raising slogans in support of Agatha drove through the villages of Chisim Apal, Daram, Resubelpara, Rangagora and Bajengdoba, traditional tribal strongholds of Garo Hills. A meeting calling for support for their candidate, Agatha, was also held at the same venue.
Campaigning comes to an end on Tuesday afternoon across the Garo Hills parliamentary seat.
