JOWAI: Heavy downpour in East and West Jaintia Hills obstructed the election campaign of Congress candidate Vincent Pala in Khliehriat on Tuesday.
“Since it was raining heavily, we decided to cancel our campaign,” said Congress leader W Suchiang.
The working vice-president of the Meghalaya Congress Committee said that Rev PBM Basawiamoit was part of the campaign and he wanted to speak about the NGT ban on coal mining but the rain played spoilsport.
Basaiawmoit told this correspondent that he has decided to support the Congress candidate based on the manifesto of the national party for resolving the border dispute, amendment of the Special Arm Forces and special consideration on the northeastern states.
In regards to the ban on coal mining, Basaiawmoit said since November 11, 2014, he has been seeking to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi but he never responded.
Basaiawmoit added that he even had a petition signed by more than 7,000 people who have been affected by the ban on coal mining. He added that Modi wants India to be christened Hindutva or Hindustan by 2020.
Basaiawmoit urged the people of Jaintia Hills to be united and vote for the Congress.
