SHILLONG: With only three years left for the state to host the National Games, Meghalaya is far away from developing infrastructure for the mega sporting event.
Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh has time and again expressed confidence that the state would be able to develop infrastructure for the Games. He had earlier said construction work would begin in the early part of 2019 but now three months have passed and no work has started.
Officials admitted that the National Games took a backseat due to the ongoing elections in the state.
However, there is nothing much the State Government can do at the moment except wait for few more months until a new government is formed at the Centre, sources said.
The state has to discuss with the Centre about funds and other necessary sanctions and allocations for the Games.
Meghalaya will hold the event in 2022, and the state government has already made it clear that it will not follow in the footsteps of states like Goa and Chhattisgarh, which are already running behind schedule to host the Games.
Earlier, the government had constituted several committees for expediting the process of organising the mega event after the Lok Sabha elections.
The 36th National Games in Goa has been postponed to a suitable date between September and October. The sports meet was earlier scheduled for March and April 14.
