SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that the state government would appeal before the Supreme Court to allow it to call off the rescue operations at Ksan in East Jaintia Hills where 14 coal miners are trapped in a mine since December 13 last year.
Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, Conrad Sangma said that the government will approach the Supreme Court with the appeal since the rescue operations are not yielding any positive result.
According to Sangma, the government had maintained from the beginning that this is a difficult operation, but continued it on the direction of the apex court.
He, however, expressed hope that the government would be able to retrieve the bodies of the coal miners so that their family members can perform the last rites.
Family members of some of the coal miners, who are trapped in the coal mine at Ksan in East Jaintia Hills, have already written to the deputy commissioner saying they have no objection to the rescue operation being called off.
The accident occurred on December 13 last year when water flooded the rat-hole mine trapping 16 miners. Bodies of two were retrieved subsequently. Another body was also detected, but it could not be brought out.
