Shillong: The proposed Railway project in the State might have been opposed by NGOs and others in the State, but surprisingly the project has found support from an unexpected quarter – students of the State.

In the words of the students, introduction of a railhead in Meghalaya would go a long way in improving the condition of the State exchequer but also foster development of the State.

“A railhead in Meghalaya will improve the State’s economy to a great extend provided the government is able to formulate a stringent policy to tackle the problem of influx,” a student of JJM Nichols-Roy LP School, Umtyrniut, East Khasi Hills told The Shillong Times on Wednesday.

The students were participating in a State-level exhibition for Inspire Awardees during 2011-12 held organized by the Directorate of Schools Education and Literacy at Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides, State headquarter, here on Wednesday.

One student exhibited a detailed presentation on the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed railway project.

When asked about the idea behind the presentation on this particular topic, he said, “This is one aspect in which the State is lacking. We only have road connectivity and limited air connectivity but no rail connectivity. So I felt that this topic will strike harder as it is a major concern at present.”

He further said that the need of the hour is to bring about immense development in the State and the proposed railway project can help uplift the State’s economy while also providing employment opportunities to the youth.

When asked about the possibilities of influx becoming a major issue if this project is approved, he said that it would depend on the State Government.

“The government would be responsible for keeping track of all the possible problems and it has to implement a stringent policy to check influx,” he added.

The exhibition was attended by students from schools all around the State.
