SHILLONG: The preliminary survey of the much-delayed Western bypass has been completed by the consultant of the project

An official with the PWD (NH) said that the consultant came for preliminary studies and now during feasibility, they will give two-three options to the state PWD on how the bypass should go.

Once the approval is given for alignment by the PWD, the consultant will prepare detailed project report (DPR).

The two-laning with paved shoulder of Western Bypass of Shillong from km 0.000 (Km 60.900 of NH-40) to km 42.405 (Km 87.850 of NH-40) which is a 42 kilometre project is supposed to be taken up at a cost  of  Rs 258.37 crores.

The project is expected to ease traffic congestion in Shillong town

Meanwhile, the official also said that the land acquisition for the Shillong-Dawki road project is progressing well and a meeting was held recently where it was informed that there were not much issues as far as land acquisition was concerned.

“Land acquisition issues in different areas are being resolved,” official said.

A visit to the site showed that the condition of the road though largely satisfactory, there remain stretches which have potholes and are also narrow with sharp curves.

The 95-km project is to be taken up at a cost of Rs 1,431  crore.

Once the road condition improves, it would be also beneficial for Guwahati-Shillong-Dhaka bus service.

It is learnt that the project proposes to build a four-lane road from Umshyrpi to Mylliem and from there a two-lane road to Dawki-Tamabil.
