SHILLONG: A trader from Assam and his driver were recently killed in Dalu, West Garo Hills.
The Assam trader Rohidul Islam and driver Nur Aziz were lured by a gang to Sensenggre village of Dalu and from there, they were taken to Ontapara village where they were killed in cold blood and their bodies dumped in a jungle. Rs 1.20 lakh belonging to Islam and meant to pay for the arecanut consignment was also stolen by the gang.
To prevent such incidents, Police are now contemplating to hold a joint meeting with the prospective sellers and buyers from Assam who often visit Garo Hills for trade purpose.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, West Garo Hills SP, Raghavendra Kumar said in the recent murder case in Dalu, police have arrested six people and money was also recovered.
The SP added that the West Garo Hills police have issued advisory to the traders and police have also expressed concern over the incident with his counterpart SP of Mankachar area.
“We are telling traders not to get lured. The problem is these gangs give advances which the traders cannot desist,” he said
The police official said that as the cashew nut season is starting, he would soon hold a meeting with the buyers and sellers to discuss the matter.
He also said the traders from the neighbouring districts, before venturing to these areas, should inform the local police about their itinerary, adding that security is also being provided to these traders who come for trade in the weekly bazaar.
