TURA: A girl child as young as 8 years who was abducted a day earlier by a woman from Krishnai market of Goalpara district has been safely rescued by Assam police and reunited with her family on Thursday morning.
The infant belonging to the Garo village of Kongkhal in Assam, bordering North Garo Hills district, had gone with her family to Krishnai town, near Dudhnoi, for shopping when she was allegedly lured away by a elderly woman on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite frantic search she could not be found but eye witnesses narrated to police about the child being led away by a Garo woman from the market.
Police soon identified the woman and located her son who was taken into custody, the same day.
Based on inputs from the detained person, police raided the village of Hahim Sukunya and found the child in the custody of the suspected woman. The child was brought back and reunited with her worried family while the woman has been arrested.
Rising cases of runaways, specially among teenagers and young women, who are lured with false promises of marriage or jobs has become a worrying problem for the inhabitants living in the border areas between Garo Hills and Assam.
