SHILLONG: The State Government has finally decided to abandon the long pending project of a flyover from Rap’s Mansion till Them Metor in the city which could not make any headway in the last several years

Informing this here on Friday, urban Affairs Minister, Hamlet Dohling said that the process has taken very long and the project has been abandoned since the Ministry of Defence is not giving permission and even the High Court of Meghalaya has objected to the proposal on security grounds since the proposed flyover was supposed to be constructed in a very close distance.

Expressing concern over the increasing traffic congestion in the city, Dohling  however added that Government now wants to construct a flyover from Bivar Road till Polo near the CRPF camp.

“ I have spoken to PWD and we will conduct a joint survey soon to see its feasibility,” Dohling said while adding that the money for the abandoned flyover project is lying with the Deputy Commissioner’s office

Asserting that the Government is keen to construct big roads in the city, he added that the population and vehicles have increased while the roads have been squeezed in Shillong especially due to hawkers who are sitting on roadsides.

“ We cannot tackle the matter as it is pending before the Court,” he said

He also said that the Government has plans to construct wide and big roads in New Shillong Township even as he informed that many offices are functioning in the area but once the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building is constructed, more offices would open there.

“ Hopefully, we can also shift the Secretariat there in near future,” Dohling added.
