NONGSTOIN: The FKJGP Kyrshai unit has decided to oppose a hydel power project which will be implemented in Ranithamar and Rajabala in Kyrshai under West Khasi Hills district.
FKJGP president Francis Sohshang told newspersons that the hydel power project was proposed by the Assam government through the Brahmaputra Board in Kyrshai area in the past, but it was opposed by the then MLA of Nongstoin and Rambrai, Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, and the people of the area.
Following this, the project was kept in abeyance by Assam government.
However, on Friday, the officials from both the districts of West Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi visited Kyrshai for inspection as the project will be taken over by a New Delhi-based company.
The FKJGP and the villagers of the area have opposed the ‘interference’ of the company.
According to the villagers, thousands of people will be affected if a dam is built in the area.
Francis said agricultural land will be affected if the power project is taken up.
He also said the power project will mostly affect a bridge to be constructed as part of the ongoing project of two-laning of the road from Nongstoin- Rambrai to Kyrshai- Chaygaon.
The FKJGP and the people of Kyrshai have asked the MDA government to take stock of the situation and to cancel the project.
